 Pastel Cards

Pastel Cards  are very enjoyable to draw. Carefully constructed over many, many hours and days, my they are produced using Pastel Pencil and Charcoal. As is common with pastel work, they take a very long time to produce, with most of this time being spent sharpening the pencils to attain sharp points. These points are vital in order to create realistic looking fur and subtle colour tones.

But realistic doesn't necessarily mean naturalistic. Whilst some of my drawings, like my Red Squirrel study, do fit this bill, others are a little more cartoony in style - like the Fox, or the Cat. By doing this I attempt to convey a little of their character. For example, the sly, slit-eyed fox is set against a dark background, conveying its sinister nature - a fellow you wouldn't like to cross paths with on a dark night!

And sometimes, a work might just be about colour - like my Lizard. Lizards and other reptiles can have such beautiful tints of colour and shade to their scales, and using pastels allows for such wonderful blending. A great combination for creating an almost-Psychedelic Lizard.

Most of my Greetings Cards go through a photographic touch-up to enhance their features. Using this method, I am able to produce lighting effects - like the Penguin caught in a spotlight. The contrasts between light and dark, and black and white are highlighted here.
