Cartoon Cards

Cartoon Cards  are my absolute favourite style of card to design, as it reminds me of all the years I spent looking at illustrations in Beatrix Potter's books, or at Manga comic books. I like to use bright, vivid colours which capture the nostalgia I have always loved in young people's illustration.

All of my cartoons are produced using good old-fashioned pencil, pen, paper and copic or pro-markers, because I really like the vintage, child-like way in which some of the colour lines are still visible. It reminds me of my days as a teaching assistant, where children would proudly present me with drawings they had spent hours on. They weren't 'artistically perfect', but they were perfectly imperfect, which is a saying upon which I have learnt to base my life.

But please don't be fooled - each drawing you find in our Shop took a lot of pain-staking time (hours, days, sometimes weeks) to plan out and do, and my process is by no means lazy - just as my pupils spent hour upon hour making a drawing that was perfect to them. However, I do love the homemade style that copic and pro-markers produce and I really hope you do too.

Inspiration for designs is drawn from many different sources. I might hear a song lyric that amuses me, as with my design Karma Chameleon, which is based on Boy George's song of the same name and portrays a Chameleon with Boy George's trademark hat and hair.

Another time, I might hear a phrase or hobby that plants the seed for a drawing. For instance, I was listening to my friend, who loves to fish in his spare time, telling me that he was about to Go Fish. This then prompted the anarchic idea of a group of underwater creatures sitting playing poker.

At other times, I will just start drawing and see where the picture takes me, as with Boogie Nights. It went from a couple of animals having a good time to a full-blown dance floor. This ended up being one of my favourites as the large quantity of smiling creatures, simply having a good time, always seems to cheer me up.

Some pictures are designed purely based on colour. Once the simple, anarchic caption of 'Hippy Birthday' was created, I was free to go with whatever bright colours I wanted - anything that went with the 60s hippy-ish, bright, bold colour scheme.

And then some of my inspiration is drawn from an emotion or feeling: like love, or friendship, or loss, or hurt, or wanting to help or encourage others in some way.

Of course, there are always occasions where a card is necessary, and that occasion will dictate where the card takes me, like Christmas, or Birthdays or Easter.
